John is Professor of Sociological Analysis at the University of Lancaster. He graduated from the University of Birmingham, where he held his first post. Has also held posts at the Universities of Exeter, Lund, and currently the Department of Sociology at Lancaster. He is also a Scientific Advisor to the Work Study Laboratory, University of Karlskrone/Ronneby. He has written extensively on research methods, in ethnomethodology and, currently, in the field of computer supported cooperative work. He has been involved in ethnographic studies of air traffic controllers, police work, managers, engineers, and retail banking.
His research interests include the philosophy of social research, ethnomethodology and ethnography, and the social organisation of work. His resentments include most of sociological theory.
